There's Something in my Wheaties

I haven't been this pissed off in a long time. Maybe it's the fact of being back at work after a great weekend? Maybe it's the shitty, 4-week long horror show known as the modern day holiday season. Nonetheless, I've been saving up some tension for quite a few days, so I'll just get started.

* Nice to see Blair Kirkhoff of the Kansas City Star strapping on the knee-pads once again as the number one groupie of the Husker bandwagon. This morning, Mrs. Callahan named his all Big 12 team and players of the year. Biggest surprise to me? Zac Taylor for Big 12 offensive player of the year.

Let's get a couple of things fucking straight here. First of all, I only respect two Husker players for their talents. Brandon Jackson and Zac Taylor. I would take either one of these guys on my team, if anything because they're both tough, and play hard. There isn't much more you can ask. Especially when both of them are relatively gracious, and don't go out of their way to act like assholes. I also realize this is just one writer and that Adrian Pederson is hurt. I get all that.

But naming Zac Taylor as 1st team QB AND Player of the Year is about the most butt-ass stupid thing I've seen since the electoral college. Dude didn't lead the conference in ONE offensive category. (McCoy beat him in pass rating). Dude plays in an offense that thrives on nothing but swing passes and lobs to Purify. Colt McCoy, Graham Harrell, Chase Daniel all had statistically better seasons than Taylor did. Hell, you could almost argue that Joel Filaini, Stephen McGee and Sean Bell had as good of a season as Taylor did. (And I didn't even mention how many of those TD's were lobs to Purify or missed tackles that went for six.)

Zac Taylor is a fine QB. He doesn't make mistakes and he's tough as nails. But if you think he's the BEST offensive player in this conference, then you're a complete idiot. McCoy, Daniel, Harrell and (most of all) John Cornish all had better years than Taylor, who did nothing more than look slightly above mediocre against some of the crappiest divisional competition around. If he is actually named 1st team QB and offensive player of the year, the conference should disband immediately.

* Speaking of Idiotic Husker things...have you people fallen so far that you have to actually have a CEREMONY to give yourself the Big 12 North mythical trophy? Are you fistfucking me? A TROPHY presentation? I thought you people were all about National Titles? I thought you didn't want to gravitate to mediocrity? Starting the game with a pretend presentation of a trophy that doesn't exist, is the stupid fucking thing I've ever heard of. It's like raising an NIT banner or stopping a game to recognize the National Champion women's crew team. How fucking starved for attention and acceptance are you people?

What's next? Is the Husker baseball team going to have a giant gala in March for finishing 4th in their regional? Aren't you people embarrassed by shit like that? Of course you're not. All you care about is showing the world just how great you are...even if it means going out of your way to pat yourself on the back with a t-shirt after a win over Colorado (who got beat 70-3 the next week), or a fake trophy presentation for winning a division that include a horrible CU team...a horrible ISU team...an OT win over Kansas...a win over K-State when they were starting a Freshman QB for the first time and a Missouri team that has tripped over themselves every single year since the dawn of time.

Congratulations. I hope the rings come back even more spectacular than you imagined.

* Oklahoma is going to absolutely sodomize you people on Saturday. What I love is Husker fan making the same assumption other teams did this season. "They don't have AP. They won't be able to move the ball." Uhhhh...they still have Paul Thompson, a great defense, a great coach and way way way more experience in big games than King Bill and his merry band of D1 reject coaches. With the exception of a 1 point...last second win over a 1/2 decent A&M team, WHAT IN THE HELL makes you think you can beat OU? Because 70,000 tractors will be parked at Arrowhead?

I realize I'm wrong a lot..but there is no fucking way you win this game. OU will make it 8 straight...Omaha World Herald columnist Tom Shatel will jerk off all over himself talking about how great it was in 1971 and how OU should play Nebraska every single week. You'll make a t-shirt. Talk to each other about how great you are. Show Johnny Roger's clip-aided punt-return 100 times, and clap for your team as they trot off the field after a 17 point ass pounding.

Stone cold lock.

* Quick UNO hockey note for those of you who care. (And those numbers are dwindling rapidly)I Saw yesterday that UNO Athletic Director David Herbster resigned, culminating the tri-fecta of university officials leaving the school after this summer's scandal. I've said it before...I'll say it again. I do not know David Herbster. I've never met David Herbster. I'm sure he's a swell guy with a family...so it sucks he's out of a job.

But in case you didn't notice, the University of Nebraska at Omaha has failed in every single way shape and form since hockey was added in 1996. What started off as one of the most fantastic ideas in the sports history of Omaha, has now dwindled into a smoldering ruins because of the actions of many. Sellout streaks are gone. Attendance is level but still low. A team that has NCAA talent has underachieved for the umpteenth year in a row.

Those of you familiar with UNO hockey know that it is extremely taboo to frown upon your own program. (Husker fan is in the same boat.) Questioning a coach, second-guessing anyone involved or anything remotely close to thinking "half empty" is frowned upon by those that follow the program.

But rest assured my fellow fans...this team...this program is on absolute life support. It's bad enough they have the advertising budget of a small high school musical, now the team itself is falling flat on their face...short of expectations.

I for one...who have been a loyal season ticket holder for years upon years have seen enough. I'm going to piss off dozens upon dozens of hard-core fans when I say this...but Mike Kemp has to go. I don't care if he's the nicest guy on earth. I don't care if he's been handcuffed by incompetent administrators for years. The fact of the matter is...it's been 10 years, talent has been slightly upgraded...but inconsistent play still prevails.

I have now passed a milestone in the fact that I don't think this team or this program will ever get better until we have completely gone in a different direction. It's obvious coach Kemp is closely tied to the team and the school...but it's also obvious (to me) that he is not the man for the job. I'm very sad I've actually reached this day...but I've really had no choice. It has come time for a new athletic director to fire Mike Kemp and bring in new blood. I appreciate everything he has done for UNO hockey...but as the program sits smoldering on the side of the road...there is nowhere to go but up.

Whoever takes over at UNO....Fire Mike Kemp. The longer UNO waits..the harder it's going to be. Time to move on.

I would agree that there is something wrong inside the UNO hockey program as well as with the administration. However, I'm not sure firing Kemp is the answer at this point in time - especially when the rest of the athletic program is searching for leadership and direction.

Let's let the season play out, and see who takes over as athletic director. Then let's see where things are. If UNO finishes the season in the lower half of the conference, I might be joining you.

You are a stronger soul than me my friend. I never would have thought it would have taken this long to become a power. There's absolutely no reason, and even with a Hobey cantidate..we don't seem to get any better.

Very few college sports programs in America would put up with this little bit of improvement for this long. (ten freaking years)

Today I just broke I guess.

LMAO, now only 17? Yesterday you said OU by 30? So by Friday, youll proclaim NU winning by 7. Nebraska 28 OU 24, Stone Cold Lock. Im making my tshirt right now, and already booked my flight to Glendale. Order Restored Indeed.

Go ahead and do that. There is no fucking way NU beats OU Saturday. Absolutely none.

If you played them 10 times..you'd lose 10. That's how confident of the big maroon enema you're going to get.

PS - Bring your hunters gear..supposed to be cold. Go big Orange.

Don't get me wrong...Zac Taylor is a very nice QB. Tough kid..and seems like a good kid as well. The problem is...if HE is the MVP of the big 12...then the entire conference has MAJOR issues.

McCoy had way better numbers on a way better team. (Up until he got hurt against KSU). Daniel had better numbers with (barely) less talent than Taylor did, playing under Pinkel of all people.

Cornish is your MVP however. ANybody who has watched an ounce of Big 12 football this year knows that.

PS - I feel bad bashing Kemp..but dude has got to go. It's over, and it aint gonna get any easier.

POY means to me, who is the first player that gets picked at recess.

Some background for team MVP----

NU: 6-2 with losses to UT and OSU. If you take Zac away, they could have lost to KU and would have lost to A&M (leaving them at 4-4).
MU: 4-4 with losses to A&M, OU, NU, and ISU. If you take Chase away, they probably would have lost to TxTech too (leaving them at 3-5). [And sorry to say, Chase is a product of that offense, he wouldn't be great anywhere else.]
OU: 7-1 losing to UT. If you take Adrian away they are still 7-1. Paul Thompson might be a different story.
UT: 6-2 with losses to KSU and A&M. Colt was hurt during the KSU game and wasn't 100% for A&M. If you take Colt away, they probably would have lost to OU, NU, and TxTech. If Colt would have been healthy they would have been 8-0. Without Colt they could have been 3-5....
TxTech: 4-4 with losses to MU, CU, UT, and OU. If you take Graham away they are still 4-4. Plug in their 2nd or 3rd string QB.
KU: 3-5 with wins over CU, ISU, and KSU. Plug in any other back with that O-line and they still get 3-wins. Cornish is good but he isn't POY... Not if I'm picking.

#1 MVP for his team - Colt McCoy
With him healthy 6-0
Without him 3-5
#2 MVP for his team - Zac Taylor
With him 6-2
Without him 4-4

Chase Daniel vs. Nebraska - I peed down my leg. vs. ISU - the 39K fans made it too tough to come back??

Best NFL talent - Adrian Peterson
But without him OU did just fine. He is an animal and would be the first pick at recess.

Adrian is by far the best player. But his injury makes it tough to vote for him for the Big XII season. That leaves you with Colt and Zac. Pretty slim pickings when you consider:
2005 - Vince Young (UT)
2004 - Jason White (OU)
2003 - Jason White (OU)
2002 - Chris Brown (CU)
2001 - Eric Crouch (NU)
2000 - Josh Heupel (OU)
1999 - Eric Crouch (NU)
[co] Major Applewhite (UT)
1998 - Ricky Williams (UT)
1997 - Ricky Williams (UT)
1996 - Troy Davis (ISU)
Most were high in the Heisman race and several won.

Bottom line, the Big XII is down this year. If Colt didn't play hurt against A&M he would be the runaway favorite. Since he did, give it to Zac & Colt as co-POY. In fact, if Troy Davis can win in 1996 on a 1-7 team, give the stupid award to Cornish.

AJ is right again, Cornish is the best player in the Big XII. How far we have fallen.

For more stat info on the Big XII:
http://graphics.fansonly.com/photos/schools/big12/sports/m-footbl/auto_pdf/record_book.pdf

p.s. The OU vs. NU game is going to be in the 20's unless there are turnovers. Stoops will out-coach Can't-a-han and pull off a 23-20 victory.

Jon Cornish is the best player in the Big 12. Colt McCoy is the 2nd best and Adrian Pederson is the best player who is injured.

Chase Daniel is the third best QB, behind McCoy and Harrell.

Zac Taylor is the best player on a team that had looked adaquate against bad teams, looked horrible against good teams, and beat the defensive genius that is Gary Pinkel for his biggest win.

If I voted..it would be:
1) Cornish
2) McCoy
3) Harrell
4) Daniel
5) Either Taylor or Rufus Alexander.

PS - I didn't even mention that Taylor would have borderline shitty numbers if not for Maurice Purify.

Agree with everything you said...but OU is scary good..and also on a roll.

Agree also on Boise. What a joke...especially when you need a miracle to beat San Jose.

AJ
Obviously, since you can't go more than two posts without talking about UNO's hockey team, my guess is you just like Cornish because he is a Great White North Canuck (BC).
I'm sure he could of played on a Junior team somewhere....
In 2 out of KU's whopping 3 wins, he didn't reach 100 yards. They didn't really need him for their league wins and they didn't ride him to victory in any of their losses.... They lost most of those games in the 2nd half when a running game can seal the deal.
Since he only averaged 21 carries per game (in the Big XII), maybe it is ManginA that needs an OB visit. As POY, he should have been carrying the ball 25-30 times per game if he is the real deal.

Speaking of tarps-r-us....

Coach ManginA was recruiting in Kansas City and got lost. (After watching the Toledo game, go figure...)
So he stops at a 7-11, goes in, and asks the clerk, "How do I get back to 435?"
The clerk takes a moment and says, "Have you tried exercising and watching what you eat?"

Back to the POY - I don't think they'll annoint Colt this soon, Cornish isn't even the best back in the league, which leaves us with Zac. In a down year, I don't have a problem with Zac getting the award. Plus that should give you plenty of fuel to get us to the bowl season.

UNO does not have the resources to buy Kemp out of the remainder of his contract which was extended before the start of this season. Like him or not, I think he's gonna be around for a few more years.

UNO's new AD is going to have to break the mold of running a D1 sport with a D2 mentality, among other obsticles he/she will have to overcome.

As for end of the year awards - meh. I don't get too excited about them. Taylor is one tough kid, though. Kudos to him for that.

Ask and you shall receive...

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Zac Taylor, Nebraska
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Rufus Alexander, Oklahoma
COACH OF THE YEAR: Bob Stoops, Oklahoma

p.s. Chase got 2nd team over Colt...
p.s.2. John Cornish and Adrian Peterson were 1st team RB's. Adrian only played in two Big XII games and one was a loss.

Blogger Sam said...

And just who would you choose to be the AD at UNO?

While you're at it, who would you replace Kemp with?

Shouldn't you be bitching about a certain Mizzou couch getting an extention?

I'd say stick with football and basketball, cuz we all know you know jack shit about hockey.

No college team can become a power within 10 years of creation-- ask Oral Roberts... we're still waiting for ORU to win a basketball championship.

UNO hockey continues to move forward, whether you think they are moving fast enough or not. Not that it really matters, you're only a shell of who you used to be... and none of it has to do with how well the team performs. And if you claim it is, then you're no better than the Creighton basketball and Husker baseball bandwagoners you spew constant venom at.

Eat me Sam. Your continued conflict of intrest has made your opinion on this subject null and void.

And besides...what goes on on the ice is the least of my annoyances. Over the past few years, the team, the program, the fans...pretty much everything has become less fun to watch than it was before. Blame is everywhere. Blame falls on you. Blame falls on ousted school officials. Blame falls on me. IT'S EVERYWHERE.

At what point is mediocrity not enough? Isn't 10 years enough? Oral Roberts?

Oral fucking Roberts? Are you fucking kidding me?

Is Oral Roberts in the top 6 in attendance? Does Oral Roberts play in an NBA-type arena? Does Oral Roberts play in one of the top conferences in America?

If you're comparing this program to Oral fucking Roberts...then that's your biggest problem right there.

Go back to your clubhouse...add more pages to your slambook...make a voodoo doll. Talk about how great it was...that one time against that one team in that one playoff game.

UNO SUCKS, UNO HOCKEY SUCKS, and NO ONE GIVES A SHIT. Even if they did, does it matter? Perhaps if you pulled your head out of Mark Mangino's ass, you'd see a completely different world than what you constantly blow out of your ass.

10 years of mediocrity? They're the fastest team to reach the NCAA tournament in history. They shocked the college hockey world by reaching the conference championship game-- as a third year program-- in their first year in the conference.

Winning takes time, and patience. You can't just create a team out of nothing and expect them to be the best right from the start. It just doesn't happen that way.

You have no idea what you're talking about anymore-- stick with football, because you lack the intelligence to understand hockey.

I'd argue you lack the intelligence to understand anything outside of the Big XII-- and seeing Husker fans ...you fit right in with them. You're nothing more than a corn-eating, ass-scratching, fart-smelling hick who whanks his won crank on the internet because you think you're better than the people you work with.

Wake up, buddy. You're just a dilusional jackball who is just like the people he claims to hate.

Sam...seriously. I like you. I've always thought you're a good dude. But you're embarassing yourself here. You're in a state of denial and dispair, and don't believe for one second that I'm the only one who notices.

You can get all pissed if you want. Call me names, liken me to Husker fan...whatever the fuck you want to do. The fact remains...deep down...you know I'm right.

If you were ANY bit the athlete you claim to be, you would know that winning comes above all else. You would have a competative desire to get better. You would want your school to win. You're blind to this because you're too close to coaches, fans and players. That's your problem.

This isn't a whim. This isn't something that just came up. This is something that has built up and built up and built up. You think I like taking this position? Do you think I'm that fucking stupid to just throw that out there? I love going to games. I love watching that team.

It's not working anymore. I'm sorry it hurts your feelings. I"m sorry you feel betrayed. I'm sorry that if the current staff leaves, there will be no more free passes to practice and sweatshirts for you. Sucks, but you have to look at the big picture.

I want to win. I want all my teams to win. If any other group of fans peaked in and saw the attitude that hard-core UNO fans had..they'd pass out at the diabetes-inducing sugar-coated Kool-aid fest that goes on there.

Throw a tantrum if you want. You know I'm right. I feel so sorry for you, I'm not even going to blast you...even though you know I can and I know you deserve it.

Sorry dude..tis true.

PS - Bart, get off my fucking back. I was putting up Christmas lights.

I'm not certain the degrading the praise of the NU baseball team is warranted. Granted the team did not perform up to their talent level, but they were still a good team. (How many of the top 16 seeds made it to Omaha in 06?)

I believe that most people knew that the NU baseball team was going to struggle to score runs last season, and rely heavy on a pitching staff that was talented. The Nebraska staff may have been the best 1-2-3 staff + closer in the country (see major league draft). The Nebraska offense was inconsistent and squandered scoring opportunities.

Overall they were a good team that the Husker fans could be proud of. Not that I'm comparing the Huskers to the A's, but for sake of arguement would you say that Oakland A's had a bad year because they didn't make it to the World Series? The same analysis could be made of the Missouri baseball program, that program probably went as far as their talent allowed them. Heck I thought they might even come out of that regional (which by the way, I believe Missouri got shafted when they shipped them way out west).

Is Kemp getting the most out of the talent that is on his team? If yes, he'll likely stick around, if the answer is, no, then a change may be in order. My two cents worth is that I would think it would be hard to establish a "frozen four" team given programs like Michigan, Minnesota, Denver, UND, BC, Boston U, and other eastern schools are all vying for the same pool of players.

JP,

I to know the frustration of an brain dead post, it's like when a certain person keeps stating that since the Husker football program has a recruting class ranked by Rivals in the 20's and equating that to instant success on the football field, or when a certain person equates coaching genius with one successful year, and ignores the other when the team fell flat and didn't make the playoffs.

I'd say guys like that aren't reading Shakespeare, they're probably reading See Spot Run.

AJ,
All due respect-- and you do deserve respect because you have shown me some respect here-- but I still have to disagree with you.

You are right about a couple things. You are right that I do have a slight bias toward Coach Kemp-- and why not? He gave me an opportunity. But you're wrong about what I am now getting out it-- there are no free sweatshirts (practices are open to the public) for me... but you forget, I couldn't even gat my name on the back of my sweater-- so we can dispose of the notion that I get some kind of benefits out of being a former athlete.

You are also right that something needs to change at UNO. And I'm sure you can understand that I am not in a position to drop names in public when it comes to the hockey program. However, if you were to email me, I would gladly discuss this with you in full detail and bounce a few ideas off of you.

But here is why I know Coach Kemp should be able to keep his job at UNO. He is continuing to move to program forward. He has taken a team from it's inception all the way to the national tournament-- and done it faster than any other program.

Of course there have been bumps in the road. 2003-2004 was a rough season for UNO Hockey-- the worst, but much of that turmoil was not Kemp's doing (and again, if you really want to know-- I trust you enough to be able to tell you in an email, or even phone call if you prefer).

But immediately after that nightmare of a season, he has righted the ship. The season after the disater of 8-wins he led the team back to the Joe, and the next season he got them into the NCAA tournament.

Yes, there was a step backwards in 03-04, but sometimes you do in fact have to step back to move forward... I know I've done so myself in the various paths of life I have experienced.

In fact, going into Pervert-country (for those who don't know CCHA hockey, I'm referring to Bowling Green) we were all panicking about how poorly the team was playing. Kemp turned the team around and led them to the NCAAs. I have no doubt he can do so again this year. Give him that chance.

I think you would agree-- as you still question the firing of Solich and the hiring of Clownahan-- that one season does not a tenure make. There will always be peaks and valleys, and as long as there are more peaks... let the man keep doing his job, because he has been successful.

Thoughts?
