I Was Wrong...Maybe You ARE Back

OK, maybe you guys are back.

Perhaps some of my favorite readers will get their wish to defend themselves when I say thugs = happy fans. Hmmmmm….Big-shot WR comes to campus. Husker nation falls in love with big strong wide receiver. Then…

Wide receiver goes to jail for the night and gets charged with several different misdemeanors. So how much are you going to defend him now? Mock it like you did JC throwing a hissy fit at a chick in his parking space? No big deal I’m sure?

This will be quite the test for Clownahan, as he’s about to make his first big decision of his tenure. This isn’t some asscown holder who smacked a Missouri student who “threatened him.” This isn’t some 550lb lineman beating up a male OU cheerleader. These are actually some pretty serious charges.

However, no word yet on whether or not Tom Osborne’s rule of “No felony, no foul” will come into play. I’m no rocket scientist by any means, but I’ll bet you a large sum of money that the following will happen in the next couple of days:

1) Statement from Callahan, “Very disappointed.”
2) Callahan will state “He’ll be punished, but we’re taking this in-house”
2) Purify will sit out some summer wind sprints
3) Nobody will remember jack shit come August and we’ll be right back where we were.

How can you not see this coming?

I will say this…at least this isn’t like your past incidents where some of your best players got in trouble for assault…at least he smacked around a guy this time around.

More to come in the next day or two from me as soon as I stop giggling.

AJ

(Late Edit - Many reports are saying he actually did punch a girl in the altercation. Damn, why would I have assumed otherwise?)

I'm not falling for your shit this time.

He's a public figure. He's over 18. He broke the law.

Stop being a pansy, stop making excueses, stop playing the victim every 5 seconds and just admit I was right the entire time.

And by the way..I"m taking pleasure in watching you and your bretheren spin it to no end. I could give a rat's ass about Purify.

Bar fights happen. This doesn't sound much like your average bar fight, though. My opinion on this situation hinges a lot on what happend with the girl. Did he clock her on purpose because he is a dick, or was it an accident that she got an fist in the midst of breaking up a fight. By the letter of the law, it doesn't matter. The fact of the matter is, in Lincoln, the players put up with some shit from the drunk asses in the bars... they also get random ass because they are who they are.. it evens out. They are high profile, and the "pro-atheletes" of Nebraska. You cannot pick a fight with a guy who works the fucking door at the Brass Rail because he didn't let you in becuase your buddy is dressed like he just got off the set of a 50 Cent video. It is called SELF CONTROL
Bottom line, Callahan is better than Solich as a discipliarian, but that isn't saying much... this will be interesting.
I am also interested to hear what AJ would say is a proper punishment, with the facts at hand.
Misdemeanor- has to be a few games.
Felony assualt- half the season or more.
btw- this just added two wins to the season total. :-)

An excellent question.

I'm not ready to make my complete judgement yet until we see what happens. It all comes down to two things for me:

IF he attacked this guy because he had it out for him and started the whole thing...he needs to go. Period. When you're a big-time athlete like that, you owe it to your team and your university to stay out of situations like that. It's not that hard. I went to bars A LOT in school and I don't once ever remember me jumping a bouncer and smacking his girl.

Now, if he was taunted, if he didn't instigate it...then I would say 4 games minimum. However, since the police arrested and charged him..AND he spent the night in jail...I"m guessing this may not be the case.

The court system will play out and we'll see what punishment should fit the crime.

HOWEVER, at the very least, he should be in some pretty deep shit, because the LAST thing NU needs (or any other team) is publicity like this. ESPECIALLY when a) he's one of the top 2-3 players on the team, b) he's a potential draft pick and c) It's O-Street on a Saturday night..how flippin hard is it not to start a fight?

The wrestling with police and punching the girl are the things you should be most concerned about.

What's sad is, if you look on some message boards of "the classiest fans since the inception of organized sport" they are attacking the girl and saying she's stupid for getting involved. I hope these people don't have daughters.

The classiest fans in the sport are also the same ones who turned a blind eye to Osborne and his band of thugs cause htey were winning. If there daughter would have been one of the ones attacked or sexually assaulted by Osbornes thugs then they would have actually said it like it was.....Osborne sold his soul for winning and thats putting it mildly. Oh wait never mind he was just "helping his kids"....Just ask Husker fan

This gets uglier by the minute. Purify hunted the guy down, attacked him, hit his girlfriend and was finally thrown out of the bar. But it took about 12 guys to push him out the door. Then, he tries to climb the beer garden fence to get back in and beat on the guy some more! Hence the trespassing charge.

But he had a good reason. I'm sure Billy C will understand when Mo tells his side of the story.

"But coach! That guy confiscated my buddy's fake ID last week at another bar!"

BWAHAHAHAHA!

i think the guy assualted a female, and her boyfriend, and oh yeah resisted arrest. i don't think that he is the type of person i would want representing the college i attended let alone the team that i coach. how drunk do you have to be to get in a fight in a bar get kicked out and then think it is a good idea to climb the bear garden fence in the back of the bar just so he can keep beating him, maybe even his girlfriend. lets not forget wrestling with the police when they try to restrain him. the guy shows that he does not respect authority, or women, and obviously doesn't know what it is like to have a job. I think he should be punished the same as any other person under the law as far as playing for the team he has no business being idolized by any nebraskan or sports fan he should be off the team for his intolerable behavior

It doesn't matter what coach does, he will be judged..by us. Not to get too deep on ya but the truth is that nearly all of us have done something just as morally or legally foul as what Purify is accused of weather we were caught at it or not. Like drinking and driving maybe..YOU could have killed someone>>right? WHY DOES IT MATTER? I love Husker ball BUT have always thought it pathetic that people will pin their sense of identity and or self worth and pride on what a bunch of young athletes (that they don't even personally know)do on or in this case off the field.CRAAAAP GET A LIFE! They don't represent you nor you them. I'll be honest, I want wins and no I don't really care how.Ive made my own mistakes and I'll worry about those..not theirs or yours.
