Border WAR

Props to my few red-legged KU readers for their team's performance at Arrowhead this afternoon. What started out as just another Mizzou tank job of years gone by, turned into one of the best college football games I've seen this year. Anybody who doesn't think KU will have some sort of say in the Big 12 North next year is an idiot (ie- Husker fans), and that's 100% due to Reesing and the receivers he has coming back.

That little hobbit turned in one of the true great performances I've seen...and even as a fan who hates his guts and the soil he walks on, I can recognize a truly great performance. I'm also pretty proud of my own team, considering they very easily could have packed it up on a cold and snowy day, with their true prize sitting inside the same stadium this time next week.
But regardless, it's a great rivalry, because MOST of us can agree..at least for a short while..the records can go out the window, and it is a thrill to watch two teams who truly hate each other fire every shell they have at each other. Coffman, Meier, Maclin, Sharpe etc...all of these kids battling injury, gutting it out on the field for really what amounts to a game that is completely meaningless sans the bragging rights.

So with that..here's to you KU fan. You've earned your time to crow and you should be proud of your effort. As for you Husker fans who are throwing out kicker smack, "Co-Champions" and other ridiculous amounts of weak propaganda...just remember this:

You had your shot at that "shitty" team in your own stadium, with 85,000 of your own fans. You had history, momentum and a national TV audience on your side. All you had to do was beat a team once...the same way you had since 1978....and yet you couldn't. Not only could you not, but you got gutted like a trout and lost by nearly 6 TD's.
You have earned nothing. Your proxy bashing is humorous to me, in that I used to catch shit from Husker fans about National Titles, Heisman trophies and 63-6 wins over my team. Now I hear from you all about a rivalry loss and a Big 12 North title game appearance that ended a 9 win season. (Something Missouri has only done a handful of times in my lifetime.)
I wish I had a mirror for you people, because you look like idiots.

KU fans, props to you for your win, and good luck in your bowl. Husker fans, see ya at Arrowhead next week wearing your OU or Texas Tech gear.

Sorry, but the 52-17 refrain is getting old... it is obvious to everyone now that that we are a much better team than we were when we played you and you all are simply worse. If we played you again next week I'm pretty sure that Suh would eat Daniel as though he were a piece of leftover pumpkin pie, and Ganz would roll and dice your secondary like a sushi chef.

It's also clear to everyone now that without Maclin you'd be looking at a sub .500 season, even with the pansy schedule you played. Good luck without proven playmakers next year (I think we may have a few returning...).

sincerely,

AJ--I was just reading the comments on the last story. There are a ton of Nebraska fans on there reminding us all that NU fans are fine with eight and nine win seasons if they can build for the occasions when they can win ten or more and make a run at a great season. I want to call, "Bullshit" on that logic.

What was the team's record when Frank Solich was fired? I heard Nebraska fans calling for his skull for years because he had the temerity to fail to win three national championships in five years--ignoring the fact that it took Tom Osborne twenty five years to pull that feat off.

Nebraska fans: YOU crashed this program on the rocks. You and only you are responsible for the fact that the fans are celebrating an eight-win campaign. Oh, and enough of trying to glom onto KU's win this morning--that was all us, baby!

Anyway, AJ. I don't know how many more times I'll post here before you strike the tent. I wanted to tell you that I've enjoyed and laughed at the posts the last couple of years. Take care. Merry Christmas. See you again sometime soon, I hope.

All I have to say is that 2.5 mil a year and Pinkel can't even win a division championship outright in either of the two greatest seasons in school history.

Never will I claim a co-championship but the Big 12 conference does...which is ridiculous.

Yes of course....we look stupid. KU is now suddenly better than you previously claimed or it was because of the rivalry. Well then CU is as good as you have been saying and they hung tough because they are our rivals. See how easy it is to spin.
Don't even start talking about rooting for proxy teams. You suck CU's cock so much you single handedly support the Aloe Vera industry to treat the constant rug burn on your knees.

Your an idiot so just admit it.

(Laughing at SD...damnit you idiot, I could have told you 15 was too high).

And Bob, thanks for the remarks...I know what you're saying and appreciate it.

As for the "if we played now" bullshit...blah blah blah. I myself have pulled that out many times..including 2006, which saw you lay an egg against an OU team in the title game that was literally TRYING to give you the game.

As for sub .500 next year? Not really sure about that...although to be realistic, it's more likely to be in the 6-8 range. Even more ironic is that the guy who is most likely going to be QB'ing Mizzou was labeled a high school GOD by the very people who blast him now. How typical. (Wait..you have playmakers returning? WHO?!? You know Ganz is a senior right?)

You wanna know who's going to be favored to win the north next year? Nebraska will be starting a brand new QB, and replacing their starting RB and two WR's. You also have to play AT COlumbia and AT Lawrence. Good luck with that.

I'd say with Reesing, Briscoe and Sharpe returning..it's hard not to put KU at the top of that list. Granted their defense still sucks..but with Reesing playing at that level, it's hard to downplay all that returning talent..especially at QB.

I also find it irnoic that NU fan is blasting Missouri for that "pansy" schedule they played. Funny..who was your "biggest win" in 2006 when you last won? I think it was an 8-4 Missouri team.

Even when you try and be creative, you're (that's YOUR ARE..not "your) just re-hashing the past.

Oh, and 52-17..had it been the other way around..would be thrown around this comment section over the past 2 months more than the word "fucktard"...which is a lot.

Good luck against Georgia Tech by the way..that should be fun.

PS - Mizzou is going to the Alamo Bowl..not the Sun. (Who won't take a big 12 team if NU goes to the Gator. Jesus, do your fucking homework next time dunce.)

Wow, what a great weekend of football. I could give two fucks if we had to win the game on a 57 yard FG. I love games like the CU game...and the MU-KU game today.

One minute and some change to go, NU was down by three. 4th and a mile...staring at a 57 yrd FG...and they win it by 9. Great game, great finish, I don't care who you are.

Same thing for the MU-KU game. Four TD's in the last 7 minutes, 2 of those in the final two minutes. Hard fought, scrapping, old school, muddy contest. Great game, great finish, I don't care who you are.

Sure, I was the first one here wishing for KU to win so that we could claim Co-Champs. Mostly because I figured that AJ's co-workers (who I am sure are aware he is a Tiger) would give him a bunch of shit over NU being Co-Champs.....

However, it is a booby prize and now that I have it, I am pretty sure I don't want it. Why? Because if NU follows KU's lead and makes a trophy of its own for the 'co-championship' I might have to club a baby seal. That's right, a god damn baby seal.

Bring on the Rambling Wreck.

The bottom line is this: Nebraska used to be a dominant team, but for the past 8 years it has been the paragon of mediocrity. During that period, the door has been open to other teams in the North, especially Gary Pinkel and Mizzou, to take the reigns and become the new dominant force.

That simply hasn't happened. Nobody has taken advantage. Yes, I know. Mizzou has won the North twice in a row. But it's hardly dominated the division.

This year, Pinkel has the best talent he's ever had - including two bona fide Heisman candidates - yet the best he can muster is a 9-3season and a ticket to a free ass-pounding at the hands of Oklahoma. A good season - absolutely. A sign that a "new power" is rising? Nope. That sort of talent is unlikely to see the field again at Missouri (wearing black and gold anyway).

It's too early to say whether Pelini will bring NU back to dominance, but there's no denying NU's on an upward trajectory: after his first season head coaching (ever), he's 8-4 and finished the season strong, despite playing everyone but the water boy at linebacker and preserving 23 out of 26 freshman redshirts.

That said, I agree that NU has not "restored the order" and that KU should be the preseason favorite next year. But over the next 3-4 years, the Huskers have a great shot at becoming the dominant team in the division.

I never in my life thought that scraggly hobbit QB at KU would pull a win out of his shaved and waxed ass today!

WTF AJ! Macklin is a hell of a player but damn it man he is only 1player! Did those other one tooth bastards forget how to play!!!! Teach me to get all forgiving and bet on a team I really dislike, fuck me!

Now as far as that rout in Lincoln enough already! We got our ass handed to us and there just isn't anything anyone can say to make it any different!

Co Champions, na. That was decided on the field.

It will be interesting to see how Missouri responds this week. I expect we will see a shoot out but can the Tiger D slow down those Sooners? We sure the hell couldn't stop either team. I think I will try and get my money back by taking OU in this one.

About our teams futures. We both have some big and I do mean big shoes to fill next year on the offensive side of the ball. I suspect our starting QB is not on campus yet and you guys have Gabbert who has a year in the system. + MU

We are losing our top 2 receivers and you guys will still have Macklin. + MU

But we do have some solid TEs and your losing your star. + NU

Our best RB is not our starting RB and he will be here for 2 more years. + NU

I think we will have an edge with the O line but I will call that one a draw.

I think it will come down to Defense and I have no idea what you guys have on that side of the ball returning.

We are losing 2/3 of a makeshift LB crew. We have some solid redshirt prospects with a year in the system now that I think will step up and make a good nucleus with Dillard.

We are losing a couple of our D linemen but the backups have been playing well and Suh will be back for his Senior year with Turner back on one end. We should be fine.

Our D backfield are slow as hell but we have one starter back who missed this year with an injury and more experience for the younger guys. We will need to add some speed in this area to keep up with those lickedy split receivers like Macklin.

That said next year looks to be KU's shot at the limelight with your team and mine contending.

But we can't forget about CU, healthy I think they are a force to reckon with.

All that said it is clear folks, Big Red Will Be Kicking Ass And Taking Names Next year! :)

Let the record show..as I will write in my next column...you people having a "co champs" ceremony last night is the most embarassing, pathetic and sad example of grasping at the past I've ever seen in my life.

This is worse than giving yourself a trophy with fireworks in 2006. This is worse than local news anchors CRYING over the college world series bid in 2001 or whenever that was.

You people are like 4th all time in wins. You've won (in case you lost track) FIVE National titles. According to most of you, you're about to win the next 10 conference titles.

Why...on EARTH...would you EVER drop so low as to celebrate a "co championship", where the team you are sharing it with is not only recognized as the division champs..but beat you by 5 touchdowns on your home field? Are you that desperate for recognition and self-gratitude? Of course you are.

But even I...the greatest Husker antagonist that ever lived..am SPEECHLESS to see the great Husker empire stoop so low as to celebrate not a National title..not a conference title..not a division title...but a SHARE of a division title that technically isn't really there.

Wow.

You people win. I"ve seen it all now. Where are you going to put the banner?

it's pretty easy to understand where your coming from AJ.

And I finally hot the hate thing down. We as a people are hated by many throughout the world because of what we have in the US.

Football is not relevant when you consider the people being killed over hate just because we live in a country of opportunity but I understand the concept.

3:24 PM
Blogger A J said...

Exactly.

People take hate so literally from a sports sense, because we are told from small children that sports are "wars" and "battles" and whatever Brent Musburger tells us they are.

But in the end, there is a GIGANTIC line between the sports world, and the true world we live in. (Go back to this time last year to see our posts about the Westroads Tredgedy to see what I mean).

Could I possibly live here for 23 years...talking as much trash online here as I do if I REALLY truly didn't know the difference?

I think that line grows more clear the older you get. You eventually see games like yesterday and go.."You know..I'm pretty fucking pissed off that Todd Reesing had a great game...but what about people who lose their child or their home?"

This whole thing is a game kids...figuratively and literally.

Next year will be EXTREMELY interesting..probably the most interesting year the North has ever seen. So many questions and subplots...should be fun to watch.

Oh, and I don't think Mizzou has a prayer against OU...but I'm glad if somebody has to play them..may as well be the Tigers. They lose..no matter..they're supposed to. Shock teh world, it will make it all the better.

Not counting on it..but may as well suck it up..not be a pussy and take our best shot.

6:11 PM
Blogger A J said...

I certainly don't think Mizzou will win..because of course God hate Missouri.

But, IF IF IF the upset should happen, the hindsight will be blinding. For instance:

1) Missouri home game in the loudest stadium in the NFL

2) Oklahoma looking toward National Title game

3) Oklahoma's defense is horrible away from home.

4) Oklahoma always pisses away at least 1-2 games per year. It is a proven scientific fact.

5) We've seen it time and time again..but 18-22 year old kids are only human. You'd have to be high not to see OU looking past Missouri. It's the biggest trap game in history.

Now..Mizzou needs every break in the world and then some..but crazier shit has happened.

7:01 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I was just about to post the same regarding OU. They do take a big dump every year -- it's usually in a BCS game, but it wasn't that long ago that they walked into Arrowhead for a coronation and none other than Willie the Wildcat unloaded on them. Missouri's offensive line may have a lot to say about it -- if Mizzou can run, and Daniel has time to pick apart OU's pretty average secondary, it could be a last-possession-wins game.

That was a great Friday-Saturday of Big 12 football. I was hoping Mizzou would hang it up after getting down 26-10, but they didn't, and it ended up as a classic. I'd say the same even if the Tigers had hit the kick, although I would still probably be puking blood a day later.

In my mind, the real work begins in a few weeks. I live amid the godawful ACC and the overrated SEC, and I would love nothing more than to see the Big 12 administer as many ass whippings as possible in December and January to put all the talk to rest.

7:30 PM
Blogger A J said...

Good comment and I agree...a great great college football game.

Mizzou didn't show up until it was too late..which is mind-boggling when it's a rivalry like that.

No matter..just goes to show that guts and emotion can certainly carry you far in a college game. Next year, we'll do it all over again, and the hate will resume. It's a beautiful thing.

Mizzou can score quickly and in bunches.

I think it will take a herculean effort by the tigger D and Chase/Coffman/Maclin have to shine, but it could happen. It is such a trap game for OU.

Having said that, I have a feeling that Stoops will not let the Sooners look past Mizzou.

Point well taken on aging and sports fanaticism. As I caught five minutes of the CU game between my son's hockey games, I saw the great kick. It was gut-wrenching for a moment, but then I thought about how happy that kicker's parents were at that moment. Then I was off to my son's game, and forgot all about it. Typical apathetic CU fan, or person with a life?

9:04 PM
Blogger A J said...

Stoops is going to play the "nobody thinks we should be here card", and they will show no mercy. With that being said, I don't think their defense is good enough to completely shut down Mizzou's passing game.

However, they keep coming in waves, and it's going to take an absolutely perfect game plan AND luck/turnovers to pull the miracle. I'm not saying it's impossible, and I think you'll see Mizzou play as hard as they have all year..just not probable.

And yes...I hear ya on the age thing. More to come on that as we wind things down.

You know what I find comical...that the season isn't even over and Missouri is already considered an also-ran in the north in 2009. Oh sure, you'll win your 6 or 7, or maybe even 8 games next year, but the north is between NU and KU next year.

KU will have the firepower on offense, and Nebraska will have the firepower on defense. And there isn't a damn thing Moo will be able to do about it. You guys lose a ton of talent from a team that got beat by KU. You know...the same KU team that we beat the crap out of. That's gotta feel good, doesn't it, AJ?

The fact is, NU has improved quite a lot since we played Moo, and Moo has taken a step back. Oh well, Shreveport is pretty in late December. Enjoy it...and book your tickets early.

A couple of things to keep in mind for the Big 12 title game.

The field sucks! Mizzou is a fast track team, and watching them fall and slip all game against KU doesn't bode well for the Tiggers.

That said, I never thought we would beat OU in 2003, that was supposed to be the best team EVER, and we smoked them, so Mizzou has a chance if OU is complacent.

Future smack now?

Hope you enjoy it trash talk?

You've done nothing. I've pointed out time and time and time again that you've done nothing.

Are you going to create a quarterback out of thin air next year like an XBox game? Are you going to somehow make Chris Brooks not suck? Who's going to catch teh ball if/when mystery QB gets it to them?

You people are an afterthought...a nothing. This converation with OU/Mizzou and others has nothing to do with you. You won on a last second kick over a very bad team...and got a decent bowl bid because the officals want to recreate 1993. Good for you.

Still doesn't hide the fact that ALL you did this season was beat Kansas (at home)...Kansas State (who was so bad they fired their coach), and replaced A&M with Baylor (again at home.)

You've done nothing. The fact that you guys are pounding your chests, claiming to be back is the real comedy. If I gave two squirts of piss about you, I would remind you so during the off season...but again...you don't even deserve to have a blog directed at you.
