As Predictable as the Sun Setting in the West

The only thing more amusing than watching Husker fan shit himself after a tough loss, is to watch him shit himself after a "big" win. Never in my years of living here has this been more evident than this morning. You need simply to read the World Herald today, or visit the comments section of yesterday's post and you'll see what I mean.

"You're pathetic, you downplay Missouri and then attack Nebraska."

"Downplay" Missouri? DOWNPLAY????

Here's what you need to learn Cletus. Perhaps spending all fall in the fields, cramped into a combine and listening to Billy Ray Cirus tapes has clouded your way of thinking. It's called being a REALISTIC FAN. I understand this is a WAY far-out concept for most of you, but you should really look into trying it someday. I'm not "downplaying" Missouri...I'm simply well aware that a team who starts 1 senior on offense...who starts 4 seniors on defense...who hasn't won in Lincoln since 1978, who blew a perfectly winnable "big" game last week....who has a sophomore QB who has never started a bigger game....who has had FIVE bowl seasons in my lifetime....MAYBE...JUST MAYBE...might have some trouble in Lincoln when the state of the entire program is in the balance.

For the last time..this is not a fan site. It's not a Big 12 football site. It's not a site where I talk about my favorite team and all the cool sweatshirts I get for Christmas or this one time when we went to this one game and Johnny Rogers was there and blah blah blah blah. It's about exposing "great" fans who are the greatest fraud in college sports. It's about exposing a myth that very few people know about, because that myth lives in a remote outback of the country, where nobody is there to find them out. This is not about backing my team. I back my team just fine. This is about exposing all of you...which isn't that hard..win or lose.

Also, call me crazy, but I also never picked Missouri to win. I simply said should the Huskers lose...which if you haven't been watching them this year..they're capable of that too..then the entire program is face-down and ass up fucked. Which...it still is. This is where it gets funny to me. Unlike you, my life is not defined by unrealistic perceptions of myself. Do I want my team to win? Sure. Do I see myself as some sort of better person when they win? No. Why? Because I'm not playing the game. I'm not sure if you know this..but all I can do is commentate. I can't make Gary Pinkel smarter. I can't make Maurice Purify less lucky when throwing a TD pass to the precise spot in the corner of the end zone. What I can do is say, "Man..that sucked" and then go on with my life, knowing damn well my team isn't Michigan or USC. (Unlike many of you, who haven't quite gotten to that point yet.)

Don't get me wrong, it was a big win for Callahan...but just how big is it to be the hottest girl at lumberjack camp? Apparently for most of you..it's just a gateway to a return to glory. Nevermind that Callahan still can't beat anybody (but Colorado or Baylor) on the road. Nevermind that even when you were up 27-6, you still decided the game was too boring, and actually MADE Missouri give it back to you.

I want you to seriously think about this...is beating Gary Pinkel in a big home game something to hang your hat on? I mean seriously.

Missouri lost this game for two reasons, and two reasons only. I said before the game Missouri could not turn the ball over, and must take advantage of Husker mistakes. They turned it over 3 times..resulting in 17 Husker points. Nebraska turned the ball over twice, Missouri went 3 and out both times. I also said they needed to attack the NU DB's. They didn't.

The biggest key however was the dumbfounding ability of Pinkel and staff to stick with their original gameplan and not attack downfield. I find it ironic that turnovers and trick plays doomed Mizzou, and not the vaunted rushing game, which was held to less than 4.0 yards per carry. I fid it ironic that screen passes on third down killed Mizzou rather than a pounding ground game. I also find it ironic that Tony Temple outrushed Brandon Jackson on about 1/2 the carries, but the Tigers were still going to have to attack the shittiest defensive secondary on earth to win. They didn't. Hell, even the 3 or 4 times they did do it, Daniel completely overthrew them. I'm not sure if it was nerves or what, but the kid played by far his worst game as a Tiger. Which leads me into another segway.

Leave it to the unimaginative, 3rd grade psyche of my Hick supporting readers to go to the "He ate his booger card." I'm not sure I"ve heard that term since 4th grade, but when you're dealing with intellect and humor as sophisticated as Husker fan, I guess you gotta wallow down in the mud and deal with it. I actually saw that video, and sucks for him...something got stuck up there. Why didn't he pull out a Kleenex? After that, you could clearly see him put his hands down..wipe it on the bench (or his leg) and then wipe his overall face with the back of his hand.

ABSOLUTE HILARITY INSUED!!!!

Leave it to a bunch if inbred hillbillies who wear foam pieces of corn on their head to laugh hysterically at a 18 year old kid get busted on TV for wiping his nose. Wow, I'll bet you nearly wet yourself. This is exactly why I didn't mention the giant fat guy who lost 400 lbs to get down to 1,500 or whatever and took in his first Husker game this week. (see last week's World Herald) But I guess this is why your team representative is Larry the Cable guy.

You know what I find funny?

A bunch of fans claiming some sort of monumental victory in one of the weakest divisions in the history of the BCS era, against a team they haven't lost to at home since Starsky and Hutch were on the air. Meanwhile, they're about to head to Texas A&M next week, where they will get their salad tossed in a hostile environment against a team way better than they are. They'll also finish the regular season at 8-4 and get their ass handed to them again by a Texas team that we all know is better than them as well. (Unless there's a blizzard.) You'll then ride your John Deere to the Cotton or some other bowl that simply cares about your hoards of illiterate fans and their harvest dollars will match you up against somebody way better than you. You will again be shown as frauds, as you complete a magical 8-6 season. To me, that will be pretty funny.

Order restored.

You are very articulate, well spoken and do a very good job of stating key points/facts; but all in all, you must be very unendowed because you seem to get off on nothing else than bashing Cornhusker football and their fans. I understand that you hate everything and everyone that bleeds Nebraska red, but give it up. All your posts try to accomplish is to get the Big Red Nation all up in a gambit and fired up at yourself, when for the majority, we all could care less what you think about our team and us in general. We know who we are, and frankly, wearing any rose colored glasses in my opinion is far better than to wear the gold and black of a Missouri football team that wants to think they are back. In case you or anyone else might have forgot, Stinkel is still your coach; and until that changes, I will not waste my time on a mediocre-overhyped football team/program/coach and most importantly, FAN.

Boy you showed me. You were doing just fine til you went to the "you think you are back" line.

Back where? Where is "having a good season" and "Nebraska's #1 challenger" turn into "thinks they're back?"

That's the problem with you people. You live in this dream world where you think you have it all figured out. Yet, you fail to see that if you all think the same..how do you know how others think?

By the way..if you "don't care" why are you on my blog, leaving me messages on a Sunday morning? Seems like you care at least a little bit..if anything to tell me off. Pretty pathetic attempt as well..but I'm sure you'll get better.

Also, please let me know where I stated that having Gary Pinkel was an positive thing?

Thanks for jumping to conclusions and reading absolutely nothing I've said over the past few years.

You're just like the rest of them.

You call the NU offense "predictable" yet they won the game in a completely different way in which you predicted.

When is a perfect pass not called LUCK? When does Nunn get credit for making a great catch.

Mizzou didnt convert on NU's turnovers. But it did convert on a huge NU miscue: a dropped 4th and 1 pass which no one saw coming, especially the Mizzou defense. If that ball is caught it gets real ugly.

Chase needs more salt in his diet.

"Very predictable"

See my comment on the thread below.

That's now 5 booger posts and nothing on the game from anonymous Husker fan. Zip. Nothing. Nil.

Thank you for making a point that would normally take me 3 years typing just to make. Seriously...aren't you people supposed to be real smart?

Yeah, you havent heard this term since you were a little kid for one reason.

Most normal 20 year olds dont eat their own boogers. Let alone on national televsion.

11:57 AM
Blogger A J said...

I ALMOST gave you credit..and then you went to the booger card as well. So it's not 5 and 1/2 comments about boogers...1/2 a comment about the game.

And yes..Nunn made a great catch on a great throw. And how exactly did the game go "different" than I predicted?

The 4th and 1 was on play-action. A great call, but still pretty stupid when you're throwing to a fullback in that situation.

So now you're blaming the final score on one play?

Once again, if we're giving back plays, I would like Will Franklin's fumble at A*M erased and I will take that win..I would also like Coffman's drop against OU last week back as well. So by my count, Mizzou was 9-0 and 5-0 this weekend.

By that logic, Mizzou wins the north.

Good point.

Anybody got any good fart jokes they can post?

JP...you know you love coming here, that's why you can't quit me.

As for boogergate....I've decided to give in. You guys win. I quit. I"m shutting down. I just can't handle smack coming at me at that magnitude.

Heh...although I still don't think he did anything other than pick his nose (which is fine...embarassing for him..but oh well)...the fact of the matter remains that he's played 10 games for Mizzou and already holds 3 passing records.

If he wants to pull his pants down on the sidelines..shit in a cup and break out a fork..I could give a rat's ass less.

As long as he wins football games..I could give a fuck less. He's not babysitting my kids

as further support for your basic underlying thesis, i went to the Texas A&M-OU game in College Station last night. i grew up in Nebraska, so i know about husker fans, too. aTm fans, as a group, are without a doubt the best fans ever. they cheer hard and loud every play for their team, and they don't have to proclaim themselves the best fans. they have the huskers beat in tradition (which doesn't mean national titles, husker fans).

Hey AJ,
Did you make it down to Lincoln (God's country) for the game? Where were your seats? Now that no one will kill you in your seats, let me know where you sat. Im just curious, and I hope you enjoyed being the house of the GREATEST FANS IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD!!!!!

OHF - Props to you. You've taken the right approach this whole time...stood your ground...taken the crap from me and shot it back. For that...you get a congrats for being one of the few people that get it.

Neither team is very good, but you deserve congrats for holding the line against me for quite some time. I may not agree with it..but I (for the most part) respect it.

You're going to get your ass handed to you in College STation next week...but for this week, you get no argument from me. Scoreboard you.

PS - I'd love to go to College Station for a game someday. We played ball against Texas A&M when I was in school, but didn't get to see many of the sights.

PS - Forgot to answer your question. No...I didn't go. Tickets fell through at the last second, and I ended up watching the games with my kids. Do you know how hard it is not to swear at a game like that?

Impossible I tell ya. ;)

Damn dude, that sucks about the tickets. You should have let me know, Id hook you up! Im serious, I think it would be awesome to go to a game with you. You could come sit in the student section with all of us. I think youd enjoy it, plus it would be damn entertaining listening to you bitch. lol. Anyways, let me know when you want to go to a game, Ill hook you up. Also, this was the ultimate game for you to go! Mizzou-Neb! What the heck?? Anyways, keep on keepin on my man. And No, we'll ass pound aTm next weekend, but I get what youre saying... lol.

What's this? JP starting to come around?

See...this is why I tell you people to go ahead and read everything before you start passing judgments about me and make a snap decision about just how "crazy" and "obsessed" I am.

Don't get me wrong..I do hate the Huskers with a white-hot passion...but I also told you all along that NU had the TALENT to win the north...not the coaching. Cosgrove only had to outsmart Pinkel to win the North. (Although, in my own defense, Pinkel and Brad Smith made him look stupid last year.)

I said it before..and it still rings true...the North is mediocre at the top at BEST. Missouri is mediocre...Nebraska is just over mediocre. (Missouri actually I think has as much talent..but as we know..coaching can be a slight problem.)

And one other thing JP...how do you know I didn't go to Nebraska?

Food for thought.

"but just how big is it to be the hottest girl at lumberjack camp?"

I'm read that in the library and had to control myself from laughing my ass off. Very funny AJ.

Mizzou looked lost on Offense, Nebraska did just enough, and didn't choke away a lead like they did against OSU.

I see big ratings for the whopping Texas will put on my Huskers in the Dr. Pepper Masacre Championship in December.

NEBRASKA IS BACK AND BETTER THAN EVER!!!!! Just ask them…..

If Nebraska ends up 8-6 will the season be a disappointment????
Nebraska BIG WINS: Missouri, KSU, KU (only if KU goes to a Bowl)
Nebraska BIG LOSSES: USC, Texas, Okie St, A&M, Texas, fill in the blank (any Bowl game)

After going 8-4 in 2005, is going 8-6 in 2006 and getting pounded by Texas and Virginia Tech to finish the season an improvement???

Follow me for a second.

Right now it looks like Notre Dame will finish the season 10-2 (assuming they lose to USC). And since OU did not get the win against Oregon, their 10-2 record will be trumped by Notre Dame in the BCS. The other at large BCS spot will be saved for Michigan (or Ohio State, depending on that game).

Assuming (12-1) Texas wins out and goes to the BCS, the Cotton Bowl will want (10-2) OU. Which means the winner of the Nebraska vs. A&M game is the likely favorite for the Holiday Bowl. I personally think it is a toss up but since it is in College Station, I’ll give it to (9-3) A&M. That leaves Nebraska at (8-5) after losing to Texas again in KC and headed to the Gator Bowl.

Missouri should end up (9-3) and a lock for the Alamo Bowl. Since the Gator picked a Big XII school the Sun Bowl is out….

Let’s assume that TxTech (7-5) can beat Okie State, Okie State (6-6) can beat Baylor, and KU (6-6) can win at home against KSU (6-6).

The Insight.com Bowl will take KSU since they travel well, the Independence Bowl will take TxTech, and Okie State will play in the Texas Bowl.

That leaves KU with an at-large bid to the MotorCity Bowl.

Match-ups:
Texas – BCS
OU vs. Arkansas (Cotton)
A&M vs. Cal (Holiday)
Nebraska vs. Virginia Tech (Gator)
Missouri vs. Penn State (Alamo)
KSU vs. Iowa (Insight.com)
TxTech vs. Alabama (Independence)
Okie St vs. Pittsburg (Texas)
KU vs. Central Michigan (MotorCity)

Those will be some great games to watch!!!!!

Back to the Huskers….. If your BIG WINS are against a good Missouri team, an average KSU team, and an average KU team (in OT no less),,, what have you really accomplished. I mean come on, your marquee win was against a 25/28 ranked Missouri team.

And with the way Can’t-a-han calls plays, if Nebraska does win the A&M game I would not be one bit surprised if CU wins in Lincoln. CU’s defense is tough enough to keep them in the game and that will be their Bowl game…..

One final note, just wait and see what Texas does to you in the Big XII Championship game with a shot at the National Title on the line….. OUCH!!! And if you draw Va Tech in the Gator, that could get ugly too.

If the sun shines on the Huskers and they end up going 9-5, is that an improvement over 2005??? I would say yes but only slightly.

I’m looking forward to many more years of Can’t-a-han at the helm. As long as he is there, the ISU, KU, KSU, and Missouri games will be HUGE for the Husker Nation.

11:42 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

And with the way Can’t-a-han calls plays,

Explain please. I thought he called a great game agains Texas and Mizzou.

11:48 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Can't-a-han:
He calls plays not to lose which leaves the other team with a chance to win.

NU's offensive output:

USC - 10pts (it didn't look like NU was trying to win to me, it looked like they were trying not to get blown out)

KU - went to OT (NU was up 24 to 7 at one point and didn't put them away)

ISU - 28pts (ISU gave up 31pts to KSU and 41pts to KU, not exactly offensive powerhouses)

KSU - 21pts

Texas - 20pts (NU had a chance to win so no complaints there)

OSU - 29pts (NU was up 16-0)

I think he can recruit with anyone but he's going to lose several games he should have won if his goal is to win by 3 (like Okie St and almost KU).

Regarding fans....

(note, I will only discuss the fans of colleges where I have attended games)

By far, Texas A&M fans are the best and the classiest... hands down no questions asked. I can't believe how great they are win or lose.

The worst by far, Colorado. Not so much the alums but the students. Get a life and get your key off of my car you loser. CU's problem is that Denver is a pro town so there isn't a big following and most of the students seem like spoiled little brats. It is embarassing.

I wasn't very impressed with Mizzou fans (they talk a lot of smack as long as they are winning and then they are sore losers with a lot of excuses). But the girls are hot so Mizzou is a push. KU fans leave as soon as they get down by 7 (I'm sure they are better basketball fans). ISU fans think they're going to lose even if they're up by 21 (I enjoy ISU fans, they crack me up). KSU, for every 10 good fans there is 1 idiot (usually a big flopping tard with a very loud mouth). Okie St, they are a lot of fun. OU, pretty lame and I hate their band... come on, get a new song already. Plus, I got my car keyed in Norman; however, O'Connels makes up for that. OU fans are a push.

USC fans were prettly classless. Ohio State fans were a little arrogant but they have a great band (??whatever that means). Iowa fans were mostly drunk (watch your step).

Which leaves us with Nebraska. They have a lot of great fans but they have a bunch of loser fans too. The thing is, which AJ talks about all of the time, there is an arrogance about most of them (which you never get with any A&M fans). Not so much among the old-old-school fans or even the alumni, but the people that didn't even go to school at NU but have read some inside Husker publication, which obviously makes them a football expert. And most of the time, they didn't play high school football. They are easy to pick out in conversation, they know every recruit and how many stars they have, they know every player (and the starters on your team too), and they can go back to every loss over the past 30 years and tell you why Nebraska should have actually won that game.

I work with a lot of Nebraska grads and most are good guys and good fans. I even work with a former player that started during the championship run (and he grew up in Nebraska). He is as cool as they come and is a realist. He laughs about where the program is today and knows that it still has a long way to go.

I used to root for the Huskers when Dr. Tom was there. I was proud to be in the Big 8 when they were representing. It all turned when Solich took over and it is still headed in the wrong direction.

Just my opinion....

Two things:

1) I will be the first to tell you..Missouri has some of the worst fans in the conference. In fact, I could make the argument that they're the worst. (Remember my feelings on how we "rank" fans)

2) go back a few months into the archives and take a look at the post I made when I got back from Branson. I think you'll get a lot of questions answered there.

JP,

I'm at home sick today and there isn't crap on TV.... What do you want me to do???? Scrap-booking....??

-all fans are the same- JP

The hardest thing to do is to look at yourself or your family and be objective. How many times have you heard the mother in front of the courthouse saying, "My child would never do that."

Try going to a Nebraska game in the opposing school's jersey. Most people are nice; however, a bunch are not. I promise you it is not the same as going to a game in College Station. Not even close.

You might be one of the good fans so hearing stuff like this probably doesn't register.... And along with Okie St and Texas, I think Nebraska has some of the best fans overall. And I'm never worried about getting my car keyed in Lincoln.

On and on and on,

One more win assures the Huskers of the division title and a berth in the Big 12 championship game -- in all likelihood a rematch against Texas -- Dec. 2 in Arrowhead Stadium.
That may sound fine and good in the football offices at Nebraska, but behind the biggest desk in the administrative building, expectations run higher. So, too, for all those supporters who've filled every seat in Memorial Stadium since, oh, about the time helmets weren't spun out of leather.
"I believe we should be playing for, or gaining on, the championship on a consistent basis," NU athletic director Steve Pederson declared during the coaching change three years ago.
The championship Pederson referred to was national in scope.
These days, the standards have been relaxed after Nebraska finished 4-4 in the Big 12 in 2005 and 3-5 in 2004 during Callahan's first two seasons. He now stands 11-11 in conference play. Overall, Callahan's Huskers are 17-13 against Division I-A teams, with nine losses to unranked opponents and no victories over teams ranked higher than 20th.
"The Big 12 North is a stated goal for our football team, because it gives you that opportunity, once you've captured that, to be on the national stage in the Big 12 championship game," he said. "It's a pretty remarkable chain of events that occurs from being a conference champion, so that's something we take pretty seriously. We just want to be a part of that."
