Self Entitlement Lives Here

I was putting off today’s column in hopes that “big news” would come out of Lincoln today. However, much like a Husker opening drive…nothing is happening. Despite the stagnation of any sort of humorous news, there are still a couple of things that are bugging me.

Much like watching Faces of Death, the gruesome events of the past few weeks, begs more questions than answers. Like why did that guy stand so close to that grizzly bear? Why did that bungee cord not have a safety harness?. And why in the hell do Husker fans keep bringing up the same stupid phrase over and over and over:

“We need a coach who understands Husker pride”

Seriously, what the hell does that mean?

Does that mean a coach who once wore a red tie to a press conference? Does that mean, a coach that can name a former Husker coach other than Tom Osborne? Just where in the hell do you expect to find this person?

This is where your geographic ignorance kicks in. This is where your self-indulgent “look at us” attitude falls flat. Truth be told, NOBODY has even noticed you (prior to this year’s completely unearned press of being “back”) in years. You disappeared from the National radar, right about the time Jeremy Shockey was catching yet another TD pass in the Rose Bowl, as commentators and fans around the world snickered at how a team could finish second in their division…but play for a national title.

“Understand Husker pride?”

With that line of thinking…the ONLY coaches that you will be satisfied with, is either a return of Tom Osborne, or if they dig up the body of Bob Devaney, and prop him up weekend-at-Bernie’s style. Who the hell do you think fits that bill if not those two? Turner Gill? Scott Frost? Tommie Frazier? Grant Wistrom? Does "Husker pride" trump experience and coaching ability? Think about that for a moment.

Your knee-jerk reaction to all of this is going to cause you all WAY more harm than good, in the fact that you are going with your heart instead of your head. You know that little voice in the back of your head don't you? He's the one that says, “Who cares if he destroyed an NFL team, he’s a genius!”. Are you willing to roll the dice on an unproven and untested coach, just so he “understands” the “Husker tradition”? I’m pretty sure Frank Solich “understood” the “Husker tradition”, and you ran him out of town on a rail. Weren’t those “old school” guys, the same guys you were pissed at for being “out of touch” with today’s athlete?

This is the dumbest G*d damn thing I’ve ever heard..and that’s quite a statement coming from the same people who asked, “Is Marlon Lucky a Heisman candidate?” after week #1. Once again, you are your own worst enemy, carrying expectations far beyond reasonable. And let the record show, it’s going to take 2-3 years AT LEAST just to dig yourself out of the hole you are currently in…and that’s on the 50/50 odds that your new coach ends up being worth a damn. (That’s certainly not guaranteed)

Do you people even know what you want? At what point does the self-entitlement end? What the hell makes you any different than Penn State, Alabama, Oklahoma or Notre Dame? Why are you immune to the troubles that have caught up with these programs at one point or another?

This is what I meant by nuclear winter. To dig yourself out of a crater this big is going to be a near miraculous task. I’m not saying it won’t happen…but it is going to take YEARS…even decades to get back to a level of your own satisfaction. And once again..if/when the next coach fails..you’ll have yourselves once again to blame come.

Well, either you or Frank Solich.

Something tells me this week is going to be even better than last. Regardless, let the record show that the rest of us are having a hell of a time laughing at your expense.

I've read your page for at least a full year and this is my first comment. Most times I get a good laugh and never read without at least a smile. Lately you've been more and more right, more and more often. You asked after the the missouri game at what point durring the game did we think of you...about end of first quarter and every big play from then on is my answer.
You have taken the cake with predictions !!!
However today is the day I (husker fan)can again hold my head high.
It is funny to me (husker fan) that it is today that i feel for the first time that "ORDER IS RESTORED" well not quite yet but it is coming!
Thanks for the laughs!

Well, I was wrong. I thought it would be the end of November before we saw anything change, but Pederson gets the boot today...

Just hope we don't fuck this next hire up and really screw the pooch. You're right, this should be a real interesting week, but at least it will take some of the focus off of the players...

Oh god, here come the nubbies saying "Were back".

Kinda like when the nubbies get a 5 star recruit and claim how great the kid is and how he will win the heisman, with out one step on the college football field.

Be prepared with the stupidity of the nubbies.

God knows their all scrabling to their keyboards buying up the "restore the order" shirts then jumping over here and sker illustrated, claming hey knew all along how bad Smiling Pete was and how they never Backed CALLY!

Spin Spin Spin.

Well, nebforosu, maybe instead of just looking at the words, try putting them in the context they were written.. Makes a big difference..

Not sure I'm overly excited about this news though.... We are definitely sailing through some uncharted waters here... I hope this turns out, but if folks are hoping for a quick fix, it's not coming just because Pederson is gone as this is just more turmoil... careful what you wish for and get into the bunkers, it's going to be a long fight...

bornred,

You forget how excited the nubbies were when after coach 1-7 said no the the sker nation, and they settle on Cally. Suddenly he was the savior. He brings in the recruits. Which is ok in the nubbies world, because its how many stars you have that makes a team. They praise cally, the sker nation as one.

Now the cally bandwagons is losing its wheels and NO ONE mans up and says "I was wrong".
That is the issue I have with the nubbies, its a freaking flock of sheep that goes with the flow and only speaks up when one lead sheep sticks it head out and see if it gets chopped off if not then the rest comes flowing in with their two cents of what the lead sheep is doing.

Most Nebraska fans were pretty pissed when Solich got fired, actually.

I certainly hope so!! I've never had so much fun with college football (...after all, just how seriously can you take a sport that selects its national champions with popularity contests! LOL) aside from the 70-whatever Texas Tech game a few years ago. One can only hope Pederson's replacement will be equally inept. Or better yet, maybe it can become a long-term AD and coaching carousel with constant turnover!

AJ,

You were wrong this year every time you put us ahead of Iowa State and Baylor in your power poll....

I can't recall anything else that you've written.

“We need a coach who understands Husker pride”

Seriously, what the hell does that mean?

Seriously?

It's about a small population of people that have pride in something that's recognized on a national scale. More or less a mascot of the state, if you will.

Hokey? Superficial? A little hypocritical? All of the above? Yes. It's a real thing, however, just like the Minnesotans being proud of "Minnesota nice" while Minneapolis is a murder leader in the U.S.. The people there (here) are still pretty nice (it's a Midwest thing, I think.)

That's something you can poke fun of all you want, and with some cause, but in my humble opinion it's the real deal, hokey-ness and all. It's the good side of Husker football that's probably not appropriate to mention on your fine blog.

Cheers!

AJ,

I just started reading your blog (irregularly) this season. I don't have the time or patience to go read through your entire body of work, so could you perhaps give us the Reader's Digest version of why it was so wrong for Nebraska fans to believe in Callahan's system, support their team, and hope for the best? Why does that make us "everything that is wrong with college football"? I don't think it really matters if you were "right about the last 4 years." You would have hated NU no matter who was coaching.

Why is a refusal to accept mediocrity tantamount to self-entitlement? Do you have corresponding USC, Michigan, Florida, Notre Dame, Alabama, Miami, etc. blogs to condemn their fan bases and incessantly lob insults at them? Or are you just that much more jealous of Nebraska fans? Please explain.

So Husker fans still see themselves as right in this situation? Weren't most of them cheering when Solich was ran out of town for a 9-3 record? Ha, well I can't wait to see your prediction for the game in a couple of weeks if you do one.

I'm "jealous"????

Uhhh..have you seen your program lately?

No thanks. I'll take my team. You can keep your faded t-shirts and old newspaper clippings.

PS - 41 to 6

"41-6" is not an acceptable answer. Please show your work.

Just wondering there were any of the greatest fans in college football left to give the Cowboys the patented NU condescending golf clap as they left the field.

I got 5,000 hits this afternoon. I hardly think you are special enough to get a personal reply. If I had to do it to you...I'd have to do it for everybody.

Just stick with me. You'll figure it out. Just because you're too lazy to go through archives, doesn't mean I'm going to take an extra 4 minutes out of my day.

Man, we just can't win.

Congrats on being so special, but you hand out plenty of "personal replies" to the easy targets every day, so why not take on a legitimate question? I'm pretty sure that question came across at least 4,000 peoples' minds this afternoon, anyway.

You've now checked back here four time (at least) and gotten not one but TWO personal replies.

If you like, I can send you an autographed picture.

I always laugh at people who click on this link and then are shocked and appauled at how rude, arrogant blah blah blah I am.

What the hell did you think you would find here?

Seriously. Snap out of it. You're embarassing yourself.

I just enjoy a good argument. I don't know why I thought would find one here.

And by the way, when was the last time you went back to Missouri? You realize that 99% of the cheap redneck digs that you take at Nebraskans apply to your home state, right? I know how it is. I live 20 minutes away.

Of that list, I think Notre Dame is the only fan base that might even hope to compete with the extraordinary arrogance and childishness of the Huckster Religion. Then again, probably not...

If it stopped at a "refusal to accept mediocrity" that would be one thing, but here we have an entire religion full of people whose entire life's meaning apparently consists of their shared deification of an idiot football team! LOL
