Radio Dayz
I really hate what I’m about to do.
Not because I have some sort of moral complex or (God forbid) ethics…but I really hate going against things I said I wouldn’t do. However, in this particular case, I feel the situation warrants it. So for the purpose of this one post, let’s forget I’m AJ the friendly 3rd party Husker observer and college football fan. Instead, I will slip on my gold Missouri Tiger t-shirt one more time and respond the best I can.
As many of you have heard, a local radio station spent the better part of 10 minutes blasting me and the team I root for on Friday. Apparently I was deemed too out of line by a couple of Omaha DJ’s (“DJ’s…”sports talk show hosts”..whatever) when I said that college football has changed to the point that Nebraska and other “traditional powers” were no longer entitled to their spotlight in the sun because of their name alone.
The entire e-mail debate was spurred by the Will Compton saga and an ignorant comment that followed a few days prior on air that was, “You’re still Missouri”.
Now don’t get me wrong…I’m not stupid enough to blindly forget 30+ years of bad football by the Tigers. I’m also not stupid enough to blindly ignore the fact that from the early 70’s through the first few minutes of the 2001 Colorado game in Boulder…Nebraska carried an arrogance and invincibility that reverberated throughout the game. I’m also not about to get personal against the two gentlemen who railed against me. They are talented in their field, and I respect the work they do. I even find them a bit entertaining when they aren’t asking listeners who they think would play Bo Pelini in a Husker version of “Mad Bo – Beyond Huskerdome.”
However the pure ridiculousness and overwhelming arrogance that spews out of statements like this is stifling. I mean how blind do you have to be to think that because “You’re Nebraska”, you’re just automatically set aside a plate at the big boy table for every season henceforth into eternity? Who the hell do you people think you are? When was the last time "tradtion" could cover a spread offense run by vastly superior athletes?
The on-air rant on Friday was aimed at several main points. In light of the idiotic nature of these points, I shall now rebut the main points.
* “Missouri didn’t even make a BCS game, they got jobbed by Kansas.”
Uhh….The BCS is a beauty pageant, and the Orange Bowl director admitted on WHB radio in KC the week of the selection that they didn’t even know Missouri had beaten Kansas…only that the Squaks had one loss. Did KU get a BCS "bid"? Sure. Did they win the North? Uhhhh...no. Good one radio man.
* “Chase Daniel is the only reason Missouri has taken 'the next step'”
Hmmmm…that’s funny. I was thinking the same thing about Tom Osborne. I mean, it’s the same theory right? One person comes in..makes a huge mark and a huge impact? If you can say that Missouri’s renaissance is only due to Daniel, than I can argue that facts prove that once Osborne left, the Huskers moved into Mediocreville. Besides, wasn’t it people working at the exact same radio station who earlier this year marveled this past fall at the man-child that is Blaine Gabbert? How soon they forget. If you can hold one person responsible...then certainly I can too. And no, just because Porn-hatin Tom is still standing on the sidelines with that blank look on his face doesn't mean some 18 year old kid is going to play harder.
* “I believe this Nebraska team will be better”
How so? I’d love to hear proof. Call me crazy, but after all the Sam Keller Heisman talk, I’d like to see a couple of facts that back this up. (I'd also like to see just who the hell NU has that is going to catch passes last year, unless you think Marlon Lucky will end the season with 189 receptions.) Not that I don’t believe an unproven assistant with the temperament and professionalism of a 6 year old can make a big difference. It’s just that after listening to a whole off season of Husker BCS talk this past year…I’d just assume believe the sky is plaid than believe anything any of you say in the future tense.
* “Traditional teams will always have the resources to pull into football.”
In other words, you have absolutely nothing else, and will sell your soul (ie recruit criminals etc) to win? Hmmm..that’s funny, because last time I checked, your last AD was having a bit of trouble raising money for the Husker superfortress. Meanwhile “little programs” like Oklahoma State and Missouri are tapping into personal fortunes and Wal-Mart money while blowing past you. Last time I checked, 40 foot red waterfalls in the football offices never helped Corey McKeon learn how to tackle.
I’m somewhat sad I have to do this…but since I can’t exactly write a 30 page e-mail to rebut them…nor can I pick up the phone and call (seriously..would you let me on your radio show?) …I have to reply in some manner. I apologize to those who have absolutely no idea what I’m talking about. But rest assured you’re not really missing anything. Just another example of denial and delusional thinking taken to it’s highest form.
If this sort of thing surprises you, then you haven’t been reading this column long enough.
You can listen to these asinine comments at the following link. (And no, I don’t mind sending them the traffic. They can pay me later)

Just listen to Severe's voice get all shrill!!!
That's how you know you won that argument AJ...
He's practically whinning...
And his point, that NU is willing to sacrafice thier BB program for FB greatness, is so rediculous!
"Name one team that is willing to do that?!?"
Uh....name one team that has to! Every team in the north is MILES ahead of NU in basketball. NU makes KSU look like Duke for fuck's sake!
I've got a 'name one team' game for you....name one team in the Big 12 North that has been ranked top 5 in both BB and FB, period...let alone in the same year.
What a bunch of revisionist asshats...
So I have been living down here in KC for awhile now. Listening to the MU fans and radio personality around here, you would think that they could beat the Patriots 63-10. Its the same here in Missouri as it is in Nebraska. As much as you hate to admit it, from talking with many MU fans and listening to the shows down here, it is still known that Missouri's season is a success if they beat the Huskers. The day someones year is made by beating Missouri...well that is never going to happen...because you are Missouri. Its sad..the fans down here are more proud of beating the worst NU team in years than of anything else.
That line of thinking is such crap. "You beat the worst NU team in years."
Uhhh no. Mizzou is 45-31 since the end of the 2001 season. Nebraska is 44-34. So this isn't a one season deal..as much as you hate to admit it.
Also, by that line of thinking...I no longer recognize ANY of NU's wins over Missouri from 1978 - 2003...since it's obvious you shouldn't be proud of beating a Mizzou team having their worse 3 decades in history.
You lob em...I swing.
AJ, I see how the "beating the worst NU team" is kind of a dumb comment. However, my point is that some MU fans think that beating NU=successful season. I just don't get that line of thinking. Shouldn't you as a fanbase shoot for more than that? Maybe not because of MU not being a great team for awhile. I know no NU fans who say beating MU=successful season. I know that the way of thinking in Nebraska may be different because of the past NU success, and this way of thinking is what you hate about NU fan.
Give MU a couple more years finishing top 10, and MU fan will be NU fan, you can already feel it happening down here after doing it once. At least we don't have to worry about that happening.
PS: Keep up the good work. I love reading your blog
Thanks, appreciate that.
And to your point, I think it's safe to say most Missouri fans will tell you that the high point of their season was kicking KU's ass and winning the north. The NU game was nice, but I don't think it ranks as high as beating KU and moving to #1 in late November.
anonymous said: "..Some Mizzou fans think beating Nebraska = successful season." Maybe that was true the first time we beat you in forever but no way was that the case this year. It was a good win at the time, national tv, all the experts predicting Mizzou and Nebraska to vie for the north, defense played lights out, Missouri dominated from start to finish. But it was one win. This season was successful because this team was ranked #1 in the nation and went 13-2.
Also, if beating Mizzou does not equal success to Nebraska, beating who does? Colorado -- whoops didn't do that. Kansas --- whoops, didn't do that. You tell me.
Mr. Ego, Beating no single team equals a successful season in Nebraska. Being #1 is a successful season if it is the final week. Since you have no idea what that is like, I won't hold that against you. Yes, by Nebraska standards, we have not been successful since 1997. Thats what everyone hates about Nebraska fans, isn't it?
Your attempt to be extra witty does no good if what you're saying makes no sense whatsoever.
Try again.
Aj,
Yet another long steak of truth driven into the hearts of these retards. When will they die?
For fucks sake corn holer fans you sucked this year, and you probably will next year too.
I love it.
I'm so glad I moved away from you assholes. When I came back to visit the folks around Christmas time, wearing my school's gear about Omaha drove home just how fucking pathetic you rim jobbers are.
Fuck you husker fan, and welcome to reality.
Bo still doesn't know dick.
Dr. Buffenstien.
as huskershaveinflatedegos said, beating Nebraska just doesn't mean as much as it used to. However, beating them in lincoln next year would have special meaning. Only then will the snake really be dead. And as much as we hate to admit it, the only team a coach has been fired for failing to beat in conference has been kansas. As long as Norm and fambrough are alive fanning the flames, MU's biggest rival will always be the beaks. As it is for them.
So if being #1 at the end of the season is the definition of success to Nebraska fans, be prepared for decades of unsuccessful seasons.
EDITORS NOTE -
BigHead, I got your comment, but couldn't splice it correctly as you requested. Sorry. You can re-submit if you like and I will publish it.
Aj-Noone really is proud of beating Mizzou all those years. It is just easy to point out when people point out Mizzous recent success. Especially when Nebraska isn't what they were (and never will be, face it fellow husker fans the glory years are gone) and Mizzou has been on the rise. I for one hope for a competitive rivalry between Mizzou and Nebraska in the coming years. I also believe Mizzou fans have gotten ahead of themselves (not all of them for the record my Grandpa is pretty down to earth)because you find so many on message boards, bars and wherever else who seem to think that because they hold the spotlight and Nebraska doesn't that the huskers never will again have it. It is a fact that in this day and age of limited scholarships that any team can do it and will do it. Missouri is a prime example. They build off of instate talent and bring in from the outside what they need and put together a nice program by being patient and methodical.I think Missouri is on the rise...and why shouldn't they be? They possess a state pop close to six million according to the census. Thats three times Nebraska's. The fact that they never fielded a BCS calibur team until now is ridiculous. I agree that many (way too many in my opinion) husker fans are arrogant, stupid and as you say myopic. I also would challenge Missouri fans to say they'd be so different if the roles were switched. As a husker fan who has spent alot of time in Misery over the years I love when either team fairs well. So good luck tigers and Go Big Red. Fuck the chicken hawks and fuck the buffs and most of all fuck idiotic "experts" who spew nonsense over the air and pander to the mindless public mob that is "college football fan"!!!
Big Red Devil Dog
AJ,
Thanks for posting the link. I have a hard time believing those guys are paid for their work. You would kill them in a debate.
Just listened to the radio comments, a thought,
They talk about how the traditional powers aren't guarenteed 9 wins every year like they were in the 60s and 70s, but they prove your point. Mizzou was a power in the 60's. 3 games was the most they lost in any year. It just shows how College football can and does change, and just because you have a great decade or two doesn't mean you can't have a decade like the Mizzou football of the 80s and early and mid 90s.
I did like the line: "Pinkel went 2-2 against Callahan." That says it all. Congrats on splitting with the mighty Bill.
Note - He is already 1-0 vs. Pelini
2008 Missouri fan = 1996 Kansas State fan - Anybody else see the similarity? Learn to win as you've learned to lose so well over the years. Then maybe you'll actually have a real rivalry with somebody other than the Chickenhawks.
Would any of you MU or KU fans like to enlighten this person on what real rivalry is? And yes, I realize the irony of that statement..considering the two states went to war.
So now you're comparing and attributing a 21st century college football faux rivalry between two perennial losers to a 19th century border skirmish with pop-guns?
Did you learn in school in "Mizzerra" that your backwards-ass state was fighting for slavery in that one and lost to fucking Kansas for the first of many times to come?
What a rube!
And to think Bush said that America's education system was strong last night.
Obvious, this last post illustrates how little people know about the past.
feux rivalry.
that's funny. Not like the big-bad monster that is CU-Nebraska that takes every other year off.
Are you saying I didn't spell "faux" correctly or that you think "feux" is a word? Read it again or look it up in the dictionary, hick. If it will make it easier for you, I'll dumb it down.
Fake rivalry = Nebraska-Missouri
Better?
Hand it to me on a silver plate next time. It will be less embarrassing for you. What a rube.
Back to comment #1 because it's just too stupid to be ignored.
I've got another "Name one team" for you.
Name one team in the Big 12 North that owns national championships in volleyball and football.
That's how stupid you sound, dumbass.
Oh, and ne-jhawk, learn to spell a little better than a third-grader. I understand typos, but "whinning," sacrafice," and "rediculous" in the same post is proof that you're an "asshat" with a KU education.
Now get me a cheeseburger without onions right away, you douche. I've got places to go and deals to make. I don't have time for idiots.
I'm not sure what that second to last comment meant...but rest assured NO argument on this blog will end with volleyball bragging.
New rule.
